The Berlin six-day bike race offers a rare opportunity to watch some paced cycle racing behind the big motors. Also known as stayer racing ("Steherrennen" in German), this is a highly specialised form of track racing. The cyclists' bikes are subject to special safety regulations and must have extra support for the handlebar stem and the front of the saddle. Speeds of 60 mph are by no means rare in motor paced racing. This series of races was contested by specialists during the Berlin Six, giving the six-day riders a much needed break for a few minutes each evening. Danish six-day star Jens Veggerby is a former world motor-paced champion.
