No folks, your eyes are not playing tricks - and my camera is not playing games, either! For some reason known only to themselves, the organisers of the Berlin Six-Day bike race decided to use some trendy multi-coloured lighting whilst introducing all the riders to the crowd. At one point things got so dark that I thought the riders were going to have to use torches!
On the front of the bunch, seasoned Italian rider Marco Villa waves to the crowd alongside his partner for this race, 23 year old Robert Bartko from Berlin. Bartko, who took bronze in the 1998 world pursuit championships and who won the amateur six in Berlin last year, is standing in for the injured Silvio Martinello, who normally rides with Villa. In only his second professional six-day race, Bartko acquitted himself well.
